International Woman's Day

Today, on the 8th March, we once again celebrate International Women's Day. The theme for 2019 is #balanceforbetter, with the aim of making a global push for professional and social equality. This is being described as a "business issue", and the aim of the theme is to encourage gender balance in the Boardrooms (which is badly needed), in the media, and, also, in wealth, so that economies can thrive.

I think it is important to talk about this event each year on my Blog, as we celebrate women everywhere, all over the world, and recognise the progress that has been achieved, and to give thanks for all the courageous women over many, many years, who have fought for women's rights. Rights that promote a position of legal and social equality of women with men.

Huge strides have been made over the years. Certainly since the 1960's when I was a young woman.  We didn't have a lot of the freedoms or rights that women have these days. Women certainly were not allowed to get credit under their own name. So a mortgage would be out of the question. Women at that time were very much looked on as mothers and homemakers.  Hard to believe, but right up until the late 60's, women were not allowed to wear trousers in the workplace.

Of course, if modern mums want to still be stay at home mums and raise their children themselves, there is certainly nothing wrong with that. In fact, in my eyes, that is to be lauded. Many women these days, of course, HAVE to work, purely for financial reasons.

I suppose my point is, that the younger women now have CHOICE, which was certainly not available before, and that, surely, has to be good for everyone.

My wish is that my granddaughters will live in a world where they can be anything they want to be.  I also take this opportunity of celebrating all the women that follow my Blog. Remember, you are ALL special and you are ALL important.

What wonderful, inspiring examples, Diane! Each of them, in her own way, is an icon.

A wonderful post, Thisisme! I can remember the day at work when women were granted the right to wear pants in the workplace. I can't remember the exact date tho-but, it was announced over the loud speaker on the floors, and we all hollered and whistled, and jumped up and down. The men just stood there, grinning at us and not saying anything. They later agreed it made their jobs easier, because we were able to do a bit more manual labor, and not be too un-ladylike, haha!

When my first husband passed away, (my son's father), I no longer had any credit! I paid off his bills, and they closed the accounts on me-telling me I would have to re-apply if I wanted my own account. I surely let them know how happy they were to take my money though!!! They wouldn't let me sell a truck of his to pay it off because my name wasn't on the bank note to own it. I told him then, that since it wasn't my truck, then it wasn't my financial responsibility. They would gladly take MY money to pay it off, though. I leaned over the banker's desk and dropped the keys right in front of him, smiled, and walked out the door without a word. Heck, I already had my own car paid for, and didn't need to pay for another one.

So, they did a friendly repossession that would not affect my financial credit, and they did get their money back by selling the truck. These are just a couple of examples of how things were even in the 1980's! Thank goodness I've come a long way from that.

I really have enjoyed your messages, and quotes. I'll be on my way to the dentist in a bit. I've been having dental work done, and, I'll be glad to get it over with.

Scooter is not doing so well in school, but he did receive and award for perfect attendance, and another one for school spirit! His dad and I were so proud, we were invited to the award ceremony at his school, and had tears when he was called up to the state. He's having a hard time catching up to the other students and may have to repeat the 2nd grade. I work with him every night, and hope he can make it. His teacher is so kind and says he does everything she tells him to do. We'll keep plugging away. Happy Women's Day, Thisisme! Hugs flying across the pond to you!☺

Dear Suzanne - well, I admire you for just putting the car keys down and walking out. It really was such a different world, wasn't it. I'm so glad you've enjoyed these posts. You are such a supporter of my Blog, and I really do appreciate it. I'm so pleased that Scooter received that Award, and I can imagine how very proud you and his dad were. I do hope that Scooter will gradually catch up at school. He's in the right place with you, and I'm sure it will pay off in the end. Having a kind teacher will also help him. Bless him, doing what she asks. I hope you get on alright with your dental work! Sending hugs right back to you, and thank you again for your very kind comments ❤️

You're absolutely right! Today, they do have a choice. I had a choice. My mother didn't have a choice but she worked outside the home. I was always so jealous of my friend whose mom stayed home with them. My grandmother worked while my granddaddy got his business off the ground and my great grandparents were farmers so the women worked, too. I guess, looking back, my family was filled with women who didn't tow the line of societal expectations. No wonder the lovelies and I are so outspoken about women's rights. I never realized that until today so thank you! Anyway, I remember not being allowed to wear pants to school. I also remember when that rule changed. :)

Hi there Pam. Good to see you! Gosh, the women in your family really were waving the flag for women, weren't they?! My mum was a stay at home mum, and, as far as I'm aware, so was my grandma. Thank heavens when we were allowed to wear trousers ! Or pants as you call them! I raise a glass to you and all the ladies in your family, including the lovelies! ❤️
