Poor Ruby!

"With any actions there is always consequences....life is full of lessons to be learned but, unfortunately, some people will always be bottom of the class". (Source unknown).

Here we are at the start of another week and I thought I must tell you of an incident which happened a couple of days ago, when my daughter was here with the two little ones.  You really have got to have eyes in the back of your head when you've got two toddlers running around!

My daughter was dealing with my grandson in another room, and I was in the sun room with Ruby, having just given her some lunch.  I lifted her down from her high chair and just popped out of the room for less than a minute.  The next thing we heard were these screams from little Ruby.

We both rushed out and there she was, sat on the floor with a broken glass with real jagged edges in her hand and blood streaming from her mouth.  My heart stopped for a minute - I'm sure you all know that feeling - there was blood everywhere.  All on the floor, all over her pretty little new dress that she had on.

Anyway, when we could finally look to see what was happening, we could see that she had a deep cut right on the top of one of her fingers.  Fortunately, her mouth was alright, it was just that she had put her finger into her mouth.  It must have been so painful for the poor little soul.

I was rushing all over the house, pulling open cupboards and drawers looking for a little bandage or some such thing.  I had loads of plasters, but with the blood literally pouring out, we just couldn't get it dry enough to put a plaster on.  While all this was going on, the little grandson kept coming up to me, saying "don't worry Grandma.  don't worry Grandma!"

In the end I found some healing tape and we managed to get that on.  Ruby was by then trying to be very brave but, of course, every time she went to pick something up (it was on her right hand), the pain started all over again.

What had happened was I had left a glass on the window  sill (I know, I know!) and she must have reached up and picked it up.  She had then walked almost all the way across the room with it, but must have fallen and the glass would have broken, as we have a flagstone floor out in that room.  I felt sick, I can tell you, to think that I was the one that had left the glass there.

My future son in law popped down to see us this morning, and said that the wound wasn't closing over at all, so they took Ruby up to the local Pharmacy.  The Pharmacist had a good look at it, and said that the only thing he could suggest was to put superglue into the wound to hold it together and the skin would then grow around it!

I didn't really like the sound of that at all, but, apparently, the Pharmacist said that this was one of the reasons why superglue was first invented, and it was used a lot in the first World War, to heal wounds.  Who would have thought it!

Anyway, I just hope that it works for my little granddaughter.  Bless.

Her hair is taking a long time to grow, but, from the back, it looks as if its going to be curly!

Poor Little Ruby! How frightening for all with the blood and broken glass. Thank goodnees it wasnt any worse. Praise the Lord! Super glue. WOW! Who would have thought it was used in the war. I had never heard that before. I guess that stuff has been around along tie. I thought it was something relatively new. I will be praying for Ruby's quick healing and this all will be just a story she hears when she is older. She is a cutie pie.
Blessings

Oh my Lord...you both must have been absolutely beside yourselves! Poor little Ruby girl...always so curious... I am so glad to hear she is on the mend.

Both my grandsons have presented these types of harried moments to us as well. Its all part of being a parent and grand parent.

Hugs to everyone!

Poor little baby! But in the end the damage is not ghso high. I can understand how you felt, I once dropped my cousin (10 months old), she was so slippery after the bath and I thought oh no! not the head. She was fine, God bless, but still my heart stopped for a couple of seconds. So breathe, all will be fine!

Oh no....poor Ruby....I hope the wound heals super fast...

oh poor Ruby and poor you! It's really horrible when something like this happens but with all the care in the world, toddlers will still get themselves into these predicaments!

Hope she is ok now and the wound heals alright

I am so sorry about little Ruby. I hope the glue works and that her wound heals quickly. When you live in an empty nest it's hard to remember all of the hazards that await a child who visits. I am sure everyone has learned a lesson here, even Ruby who now knows the danger of handling glass objects. Have a great Monday, dear friend Thisisme!

Bethe77 - yes, praise the Lord indeed. I could have been so much worse!

DonnaB - thank you for the hugs! Yes, it is all part & parcel of being a parent and grandparent I'm afraid!

Claudia Novac - Gosh, I can imagine how you felt when you dropped your cousin. Eeek! Thank goodness all was well.

Caterpillar - thank you!

LyndyLou - yes, toddlers get everywhere, don't they?! I'll be seeing her again tomorrow, and hope that the wound will be healed over.

Shady - yes, you do forget. It's been a steep learning curve for me again over the past couple of years!! I will be scouring the room in future when she's here!! Have a good week dear friend.

As Shady mentioned about the empty nest we have that situation with having to move lots of things when my grandsons come over but still they get into things and have minor accidents. Sorry you had to go through all that stress and worry but glad it was not so serious. Just one of those things that are going to happen. I too hope she heals very quickly and hope you have a marvelous week.

Poor little Ruber. Moments like that are when your heart just jumps in to your mouth isn't it. Thank goodness she's ok and hurrah for super glue (I had no idea that's what it was originally used for!).

Southhamsdarling said...

Odie - yes, however hard we might try to avoid it, they are going to get up to mischief!! It was lovely to see the photos of your little grandsons. Hope you have a good week too, my friend.

Becca - I hope so too!

LindyLouMac - yes, my heart was in my mouth! Especially when this blood was everywhere! I shall see her tomorrow, so will see if the superglue has worked!

Gawgus things - Poor little Ruber indeed!!

Oh poor Ruby! I'm glad to hear she is OK. Those little ones are very quick! That is for sure! I have heard that about super glue, so I hope all goes well with the healing process! :) Have a lovely Monday!

Paula MJ - really lovely to hear from you. I've missed you! Yes, as you say, do not get near your fingers! LOL! Hopefully they managed not to attach her to anything else!!

flowers on my table - thank you! Both my daughters didn't have any hair for AGES, and then they both had a mass of curls. Mind you, they now spend all their time using straighteners!!!

Southhamsdarling said...

Kristina - quick isn't the word for these two!! LOL!! Hopefully when I see her tomorrow, it will be all better. Hope you have a lovely week too.

I don't like the sound of the superglue either only because I think it would leave a small lump on her finger. I would give it more than a day to close before trying it - I cut my finger on a can lid one Thanksgiving and it took a week to finally close. I showed the scar to my nurse friend and she told me that it looked as tho' I probably needed a stitch in it because it had been so deep - but I just kept bandaging the thing up. Just my two cents.

My best thoughts to lil' Ruby that she heals soon and no more scaring poor Grandma.

I don't think my heart can handle being a grandma. hehee

This...Poor baby and poor you but you know as well as I do this wasn't your fault. It's not like you have kids living with you all the time and you just forgot. My son was 8 months old and almost lost his pinkie finger and my girlfriend was watching him when it happened. Those little hands just move quick. She'll be fine Grandma. Babies heal quickly thank goodness. Hugs.

Bouncin'Barb- lovely to have your comforting words! Thank you . Hope you're resting after the journey.

I KNOW that has to make you feel just horrible. Accidents do happen though. Sorry that it did and I hope she heals fast.

Once my husband and I were watching our grandson - we were both in the same room with him - and as he was walking - he tripped over nothing - and fell. His eye was just at the right height of the coffee table and he slit the skin right next to his eye.
Blood was everywhere.
We rushed him to the ER.
They had to papoose him down and they super glued his eye slit.

I had a hard time forgiving myself and he still has a scar and I'll always remember that.

These little ones are so precious.

Love,
sandie

Poor Little Ruby!! I am soo sorry that this happened to her (and to you!). Has her little wound healed yet? I have never heard of the superglue thing either! But, if the pharmacist suggested it, then he must know what he is talking about. Sending ((HUGS)) to you and to Ruby!

We have had our share of accidents with the grandchildren too. You never know what they will get into. My granddaughter was outside eating the manure I had on the patio. We called poison control and they said it was okay, but who would think a child would eat that?

One time my daughter climbed on the back of the toilet and ate Ex-Lax, a laxitive. It looked like chocolate. These things happen. I am so glad Ruby is alright. What a beautiful name she has.

Wee ones are so fast, it is amazing! If it's any consolation, when I was a wee one, I had my fingers in the door.... I won't describe more, as you can probably guess what happened. Anyway, if my little fingers could recover from that, Ruby's little finger will be just fine!

Oh how awful for you!
Super Glue - well it stuck my Mum's tooth in very well until she got to Cyprus so hopefully it'll do the job. I think I'd better tell son that if he has children it'd be a good idea to not bring them around here - I think I'd be over anxious about them. Hope Ruby feels better now.
Been catching up again on your posts and I noticed that you have foound an app for the iPhone for blogging...could you please tell me what it is dear clever one?
Hugs from a misty Staffordshire...well it's either misty or I need to clean my specs again.

Facing50Blog.com - you must be feeling pretty bored if you have been reading through my old posts!! Will e-mail you about the iPhone App. Ruby is here now, and her little fingers has healed really well. Phew!

Southhamsdarling said...

Chatty Crone - that must have been pretty horrendous with your little grandson's eye. I feel better that they used superglue for that as well!! Apparently they use it in hospitals quite a lot. As you say, accidents can happen even if you are watching them.

Becky - it has healed up lovely. Thanks for the hugs for us both!

Belle - Fancy eating manure and the laxatives!!! Bet you didn't think it was funny at the time though.

OnMySoapbox - Eeek! I bet that was so painful for you when you had your fingers in that door. Poor you!

Southhamsdarling said...

SkippyMom - thanks for your comments, as always. You'll age overnight when you're a grandma. Ha! Ha!!

Poor little Ruby! And YOU! I completely understand that kind of guilt. But you know that accidents do happen. And kids are so resilient---thankfully! Very interesting about the super glue-- I had no idea!
