First of all today, I urge you to go and visit Carol's post at Facing50withhumour - the one entitled "A Little Bit Of What You Fancy....". It is all about her French friend (the uber slim Solange) giving her advice about how French women manage to stay so chic and slim. I guarantee it will bring a big smile to your face. I know that many of my Followers also follow Carol's blog, but if you don't, please go over and have a peek.
For my newer Followers, I thought perhaps you might be wondering about my Blog name, i.e. Southhamsdarling. Well, the 'darling' part is obvious of course, for that is what I am (Hee Hee!). The first part is from the South Hams, which is the most delightful part of the county of Devon, which is where I was born and live. The South Hams really is the jewel in Devon's crown and that is why thousands of holidaymakers flock to the region during the summer months (Emmetts or Grockels, we call them).
In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles, described the South Hams like this -
"South Hams - District in the south of Devon, with a line being drawn from Tor Bay to Plymouth Sound, and spreading away to the sea in bold swells with winding combes, and rich vales. It comprises about 240 square miles, and is so fertile as to be called "The Garden of Devon."
In the South Hams, the countryside consists of rolling hills which gently meander down to the sea, where the water glistens like diamonds. I'm sending you all an open invitation to come and visit. I know you would love visiting the little villages and the cottages with their thatched roofs. I would treat you all to a Devon Cream Tea, which is a speciality in these parts. In fact, as I walk along, quite often the locals are heard to say "tell e what, that maid, ers been eating too many cream teas again, me 'andsome!"
You will see that I was trying to give you an example of the Devon dialect there, which is completely different from the rest of England. I will write a separate post on that another time!
( I bet I've spoilt the myth now haven't I?! I expect all my American friends were thinking that I spoke like the Queen! LOL!).
Just a few photos to whet your appetite for when you visit :
So, do you think you would like to come and visit?!

But it must be warm when i come. :) The tea and cream looks yummy and delightful. Thank you for the bit of history on your name and the country side where you dwell.
It is a lovely place and I will look forward to coming. Should be on the next flight in. (lololol)
Thank you for the tips today when you stopped by. I will be trying that out the next time I need it. Seems most of them want you to link exactly only that which is that page of ....
I apperciate your help.

Blessings
I think I might be in love... :) Oh! Those beaches, and the houses, and those pretty, pretty lanes, and that heavenly looking tea!! I'm going to be dreaming about it tonight..
And I have one more destination to add to my dream world tour. :D :D :D
So pretty! Can't wait for a cream tea and to hear those dulcet tones!!
This Is Me - I already told you I am coming :) Great post!
Lovely pictures as always!! So when do you have availability? I love England and would love to come back...maybe it's a place to put back on the bucket list to visit again. hugs dear friend.
Nothing like Devon clotted cream;and a pint of scrumpy....later of course.
This -- I am saving my pennies!!! I would LOVE to come for a visit!!! It has been my dream since I discovered that my ancestor's are from that area! Well... Somerset, anyway! :) It looks so beautiful & peaceful there! Thank you for sharing more about the area that you live. ((HUGS)) to you, my friend!
I've never been across the pond that separates us Thisisme but you sure make me want to come right on over. The pictures are heavenly. Although we have pretty places over here as well there is just something about a little thatched roof cottage and narrow winding path to the sea that is so appealing. And of course I really picked up on the "Darling" part. I already knew about that. Have a great rest of the week.
Odie
How fortunate you are to live there surrounded by such beauty, Thisisme. I sometimes try to imagine my blog friends actually uttering the words that they have written. I assign a speaking voice and accent to each. I realize that the voice my mind creates doesn't even come close in some cases. It matters not. We are all using the universal language of love which is transcendent and without borders.
i am packing my bags now to come visit well as soon as i win the lottery or that million dollar idea of mine gets made. oh well guess i'll just sit here and stare at the beautiful pictures and dream. as always a wonderful post i love reading your thoughts have a beautiful day
Bethe77 - I'll be at the airport to meet you. Do hope that you manage to do your next link up okay!
PencilGirl - I'm sure you would fall in love with it, but I'm also sure that there are beautiful places where you live as well!
Gawgus Things - well, you might not have to wait too long!!
Claudia - glad you enjoyed the post!
Colenic - for you, I would make room anytime!!
Me - you're so right about the clotted cream, and the scrumpy of course!! But not together! Thank you so much for popping into my Blog. It was lovely to see you.
Becky - get yourself over here - we'd have such a lovely time!
Odie - I'm sure I would love to come and see all the beautiful places around you as well. Wouldn't that be wonderful?! Thank you for your last comment!!
Shady - I know just what you mean about the voices. One of my American blogging friends says that she always reads my blog in an English accent! That is the old Devon dialect that I used in my post, and, of course, people do talk like that, but I promise I am a little more refined than that!!!! LOL!!!
Becca - thank you for your lovely comments. It's funny, but we have out little band of followers who always stop by and comment, and I really do appreciate you all!
Oh my goodness, what are you going to do when we all turn up en masse. Do you have shares in any the local cream tea establishments?
I am booking tickets as we speak. :)
It looks and sounds lovely. And if you can understand my southern twang then I know I will love your Devon voice. In fact you can do all the talking. giggle
Now I want a scone. :D
I have been to Devon, it is absolutely gorgeous and the sun shone the whole time. The kids were only little then.
Oh how I wish I could have a cream tea again, absolutely de-lish!
LindyLouMac in Italy - if you all turned up en-masse, there would have to be some camping out in the garden I think!!
SkippyMom -I'm sure I would love your Southern drawl! (Is it a bit like Gone With The Wind?!). Trust you to be thinking of food, in asking for a scone! You'll notice that no-one else did that!!!
LyndyLou - That was a long trip for you down to Devon! You were very lucky if the sun shone all the time!
Blogger party at Thisisme's! What a great idea! Can it be done? Aren't you also planning a beautiful garden wedding?
Of course I would love to visit! Your part of the world is truly beautiful. I love that you gave us all a sound byte of the accent. I live in a place where many accents can be heard. Since I am from the north, my southern friends think I talk funny. I had a hard time understanding their version of English.
The tea looks so delicious...I might have to try to make that for my family someday.
Hello hello hello! What's this I find here Madam? You have been promoting my blog again. I am extremely flattered. Thank you for that.
I love Devon. My best friend left me here (boo hoo)and moved to Buddleigh Salterton where she opened up a tea room and sold clotted cream and scones.
I think you should let the Devonshire Tourist Board know about this wonderful post - sounds like you've attracted a lot of potential visitors to the area - you should get at least a commission or a mention in the Devon Times :)
We came down last March. Time for a revisit methinks.
Must brush up on that strange dialect you have though - it is a far cry from the Brummies around here (pause for a joke for all Brummies...How do you tell the difference between a buffalo and a bison? Answer you can't wash your hands in a buffalo! - only works if said with Brummy accent)and my Standard English (plum in the mouth) accent.
Really lovely photographs.
XOXO
Dear "This Is Me," I just found your 2 delightful comments on my blog. I would be very pleased to have you keep stopping by my "Attic." Of course, I would.
And I'll be back to your lovely blog also! But right now, we are expecting another snow storm over here, over the pond. -sigh- And it's time to head to the grocery store to stock up. -pout-
Can you tell? I'm very tired of Winter, by now? ,-) Oh how I will love to just kind of "fall into" your beautiful blog, with your photos of the beautiful area, where you live.
'Till next I visit,
Gentle hugs..,
kneesandpaws - Ooops! I forgot to say, you would have to wait until AFTER the June wedding before you all came to visit!
Facing50Blog.com - well, I thought your blog needed all the help it could get!!! LOL very loudly!!! What a coincidence that your best friend came down here and opened up a tea shop. Well I never!! When you next visit, you must let me know - as long as it's not the same time as the wedding of course!! Oh, I don't know though, hubby could wear his striped blazer again!
Aunt Amelia's Attic - lovely that you popped over to see me, and I see that you have become my latest Follower! Thank you so much, and thank you for your lovely comments. I like that - "gentle hugs". I shall look forward to getting to know you.
You live in paradise! You hooked me with the first photo of the thatched roof house. What a beautiful place to live. Canada, with our rugged mountains and wild animals, is an untamed place in comparison.
when should i book my flight?
Oh my but you live in a truly lovely place! It's almost lovely enough to make me over come my fear of flying and rush right over!
Belle - yes, we certainly live in different places, but I know that you will have beautiful places round you as well.
Jumble Mash - you can come over any time you want. I'll be waiting!
EmptyNester - I didn't realize you had a fear of flying :( Would take quite a while to cross the pond in a rowing boat!!!
