Daughter Was Sad

One day last week, the bride to be and I were talking about the wedding (now there's a surprise!!!), when she suddenly started crying.  Eeeek! I thought to myself - she's having second thoughts, but, phew, it was nothing like that.  She said, "I wish grandma could be with us for the wedding."

My dear mum was very much loved and adored by my two daughters, and we all still miss her very much indeed, even though she passed away fifteen years ago in June.  Anyway, my daughter has said that she would like to put grandma and grandad's wedding photo on the table where her wedding cake will be, so that they will be there with us in spirit.  I was quite touched that she had thought to do that.

I don't know if it's the same where you are but, certainly, over here in England we are into 'retro' and 'vintage' in a big way.  I ordered these vintage cake stands from e-bay.  What do you think?  We are going to use them to put the scones on when we arrive back after the wedding ceremony.  I think they will look very pretty on white tablecloths.

Your mom was so beautiful on her wedding day, as I know your daughter will be on hers. What a lovely idea to have the photo next to the cake.

Just stunning This - and the cake stands are gorgeous too! :)

I think that is truly a beautiful idea and the thoughtfulness and love behind your daughter's request is just breathtaking.

All out love!

[make me drool and tell me what kind of scones ]

Your Mum would be so very proud of her beautiful granddaughter! It is indeed so very touching that your "little girl" still misses her gran so much Such a lovely idea of hers. Belle - you're the first one to comment today? Does that mean you were up very late again?! Thank you for your sweet comments.

SkippyMom - yes, I thought it was a lovely idea! The scones will only be plain, but will be filled with strawberry jam and Devon clotted cream. Mmmm!

Desiree - thank you! Yes, the excitement is definitely mounting now. Eeek! I just hope that I'm not boring my little bloggy friends with it all!!

I love the idea of the photo of the grandparents being where the cake is going to be. What a wonderful place of honor and a reminder of such grand love and that they will be with you in your hearts and memories smiling down from heaven upon you all.
The cake plates are so very lovely what a wonderful find they are.
Blessings

lyndylou - yes, I'm very pleased with the cake stands. Isn't it funny how things like that are very 'in' at the moment. A few years ago, they were still hiding in peoples' cupboards!

Bethe - I'm sure they will be smiling down from heaven, and it will be lovely for them to be with us, as it were.

Lovely end quote.

I'm sure scones would look very appetizing on those plates!

Here in Malaysia we have all sorts of weddings including chinese, hindu and muslim weddings, which we have attended. Each is different and unique in its own way as it follows various traditions, and each has similarities too.

It'll be a nice touch to have your mum's picture there :)

My mum passed away 16 years ago in February. I often think about how much of my life she has missed. She never saw the house in which I am currently living. She never saw my dog Toto who is now almost 12. She never met my grandchildren, ages 8 and 14. I could go on and on. As you wrote we can only have faith that our dearly departed are with us in spirit. Have a fine Devonish day, dear Thisisme!

Duncan - It must be very interesting to have attended all those different faith weddings. Quite an experience! Yes, I think it will be lovely to have mum's photo there.

Shady - yes, it's very sad to think what our mums have missed out on. My mum never saw any of my grandchildren, but my oldest daughter always says that mum picked out her little girl and sent her down for her, which is another lovely thought. I very much believe that they are here with in spirit. Otherwise, what's the point of it all. Hope Florida isn't too hot for you at the moment!

Your post really brought back memories. My Mum died when my children were quite young so when it comes to events in their lives that I know she would have been so proud, like when the Daughter graduated from Cambridge University, it is me who misses her most. However, when Mum died my Dad came to live with us and the children grew up with Grandpa and were very, very close to him. The Daughter really missed him on her Wedding Day and when The Man mentioned Grandpa in his Father of the Bride's speech we all got a bit tearful.

How sweet of her, to want their pic out, and to thus remember them, at her wedding.

And I love such sweet vintage type items as the serving dishes with the wee little flowers on them. Just love them. :-)

I had a friend who - when her daughter got married - there was a table especially for all the lost ones - with a picture of them and a little flower arrangement - this way they felt they honored them and they came...

Masia Mum - thank you for visiting today. It is sad at family occasions when a mum or dad (or grandma and grandpa) are missing, and, as you say, it is usually the big events that we miss them the most. That was lovely the man mentioned your dad in the speech. I think it's lovely to honour them like that.

Aunt Amelia's Attic - Yes, it was a very touching tribute to think of them like that. I know - those vintage cake stands are so sweet!

Chatty Crone - what a truly lovely idea. It's so good to know that they are not forgotten and that they live on in us.

Becca - thank you so much.

After my husband died, on that following Thanksgiving, I put his picture on the dining room table so he could be with us. Somehow it made it more enjoyable so I think what you're doing with the lovely photo will be great. Those dishes are gorgeous. Wish I had a cinnamon chip scone from Starbucks right now!!!

i love this idea, and what a sweet tribute. for my wedding, i went to etsy and bought a very inexpensive bouquet charm for my flower bouquet. the charm was a little picture frame, and inside it, i put my grandma's picture. she passed away five years before i got married. it was a very sweet, small way to honor her, and she got to be with me all the way up to the alter. i'll treasure it always.

LindyLouMac in Italy - sorry, didn't mean to make you tearful!! I agree, the plates do look gorgeous.

Bouncin'Barb - That was a lovely, thoughtful idea to put Rich's photo on the table at Thanksgiving. A very touching tribute. It seems that quite a few people do this sort of thing, and I think it's a lovely way to honour them and to let them know that they're not forgotten. Oh stop! that scone from Starbucks sounds so delicious.!! Wish I had one right now as well!

vintch - I've never heard of a bouquet charm before. What an absolutely lovely idea, and what you did for your grandma was so touching. Brought a tear to my eye!

I love the cake stands I would love some like them myself.

I think if would be a beautiful thing to have her grandparents photo on the table.

When my sister got married my brother in-law (Mick) placed a photo of my brother in-law's (Ed) mother on the wedding table which which Ed was very touched by. Sometimes Mick could think of someone other then himself and doing that for his brother was a nice thing.

Anne in Oxfordshire - I quite understand your feelings about your dad. I have a very good friend who will be 78 in June. She lost her dad when she was 10 also, and she still gets very upset when we talk about it. Hugs to you.

On My Soapbox - thank you! Yes, it was a lovely idea and most people seem to have liked the retro cake stands.

Jo-Anne Ramblings - That really was a lovely thing that Mick did for his brother on the brother's wedding day. Very touching.
