I've 'Adopted' A Baby Chick!

Now let me tell you a story.  Are you sitting comfortably? Then I'll begin....

I have a blogging friend called Glenda, over at As Life Happens and she has been telling this wonderful saga of Olive, a Polish Hen, who had been sitting on infertile eggs for 27 days, waiting for them to hatch.  I have been following this little story, and found it to be so sad! Then, on Mothers Day, a little miracle happened.  Please pop over to Glenda's blog and read all about Olive and how she came to be a very proud mother of this new little baby chick.  It is really heartwarming.  You will have to go back a few posts to catch the full story, but I promise you that it will be worth it!

Now Glenda had a little competition amongst her Followers to come up with a name for this new arrival, and you can read the suggestions on her blog.  It had to be a name that would be suitable to be altered to a girl or a boy, for when they find out whether the little chick is male or female.

Anway, I put forward the name Rube, so that it could be Ruben if it was a little fella, and Ruby if it turned out to be a little gal.  Guess what, my suggestion was chosen. YAY! There were no prizes in this competition, but I feel that I am now an honorary Mama to this little chick, and I shall be following its progress with trepidation, hoping that it will grow big and strong!

Talking about chickens, this is something that the hubby has been on about for a couple of years now.  I wasn't that keen, but then I thought that it would be quite nice (I would actually love to keep Alpacas, but that's another story.  If you don't know what one looks like, just look at this picture.  Aren't they just adorable?!).

Anyway, going back to my hubby wanting chickens, the Christmas before last, as one of his pressies, I bought him a chicken-keeping course somewhere deep in the countryside!  Off we trundled, and had a wonderful time, learning how to look after the chickens, how to clip their wings, how to pick them up etc. etc. , but here we are, two years later, and stilll no chickens! To be fair to hubby, he is always very busy.  Perhaps when he FINALLY retires - not that I can see that ever happening! Oh well, at least he's not hanging round under my feet all day.

I think my grandchildren would love to be able to walk down the other end of the garden and collect fresh eggs for their breakfast, don't you?!

You must be sure to tell Ruby Violet that she was the inspiration behind that chick's name, Thisisme. I would have chosen Daisy as the perfect girl/boy name! (LOL) A word of advice: if you decide to keep alpacas, don't let them jump up on the furniture... they'll ruin it in no time flat! (LOL) Have a marvy day over your way, dear friend!

I really miss the days growing up when we had plenty of chickens, pigs, goats, geese and even peacocks. That was a cute story. have a great day.

I really really really want chickens. I am not really sure why but I have been on a kick about farm animals lately...i think it has something to do with the blogs that I am reading on a regular basis! Congrats on naming the baby chick. Hope you are well..hugs and love

I love the post! Olive will love knowing that she and Rube are getting international exposure. I did a tongue and cheek post back in March titled Olive Will Be an Overnight Web Sensation so maybe it will come true, LOL. You may have to copy and paste, but the post link is below:

Congrats on your name suggestion being picked. Shady - you are a hoot. My goodness.

Congratulation on your bundle of joy! hehe. That is so cute. I like the reasoning behind "Rube". No wonder you won out! Cute story.

Shady - Yes, I will tell Ruby about the little chick!! I'm glad to see that Daisy has got a mention again today! LOL! I've got visions now of the Alpacas running riot in the house!!

Odie - It must have been wonderful growing up with all those animals around you.

Colenic - you're quite right, lots of blogs do seem to be mentioning chickens lately. Perhaps we'll both have some one day!

knees and paws - for some reason the story of little Olive sitting on her eggs which were never going to be hatched, really touched me, so I'm glad it all had a happy ending!

Glenda - glad you enjoyed the post!! I shall pop over in a moment to read the post that you have just told me about. Good old Olive!

Chatty Crone - I agree, it does seem to be the 'in' thing at the moment! We've got plenty of room, so I think it would be quite nice!

Kristina - thank you! That Shady is a hoot, isn't he. I love reading all his comments on other people's blogs!

Bouncin'Barb - hee hee indeed! It was a cute little story though, wasn't it?!

Not many people can say they are the mom of a chicken! Congrats on winning. I have wanted a chicken ever since I knew someone who owned one that had baby chicks. I finally saw with my own eyes what Jesus said; how he would love to gather us as a hen gathers her chicks.

Belle - that's such a lovely comment that you have left today. Thank you!

Nothing wrong with having a few little chicks around. We had several growing up as pets. That is not good when you lose one.I am sure someone will come up with a clever name for her.

I think the name Ruby is such a nice name but I was a little confussed when I read the title of the post and saw a photo of alpacas and thought they are not chickens what the did she name a alpaca "chicken". Yeah I know I am a little silly at times but hey I am allowed to be......then I read the post and it all made sense to me although if I left this comments with all the typos in it you would think I was drunk or something......
yeah I have made a lot of mistakes but I have gone back and fixed them like a good girl.

LV - thank you! Nice to see you here today.

Becca - yes, it must be lovely to just go out and collect the fresh eggs!

Jo-Anne Mother and Nana - your comment did make me smile today, about the alpaca chicks!! Anyway, I'm glad you went back and corrected all the typing mistakes!! We have to keep up standards, you know. LOL!!

Your husband sounds like a hard worker! My dad has barely missed a day of work in years and got a reward for his dedication last year. I've learned a great deal from his silent, hard-working example.

Cute name-that-chick story. :-)

But as to keeping any animal, I fear the "cuteness" over-rides our practicality. And we tend to forget all the work, work, work involved.

The chicken story is so sweet and the name is very fitting. You reminded me of growing up at grandmother's and spending almost all my time with the chickens and ducks.

I know you already got this award, but I also wanted to offer it to you.

Southhamsdarling said...

Duncan - Yes, my husband is a very hard worker. He will be 67 in July, but has no intention of slowing up!!

Aunt Amelia's Attic - Yes, I totally agree with you about the work involved with keeping animals!! Even chickens will be quite a tie! Anyway, we'll see!

Lavi - it must have been so good growing up with chickens and ducks around you! Thank you SO much for the Award. I will pop over to your blog right now.

Congratulations! Does this mean you'll get to eat the chick when it grows up?! Alpaca's, hmmm, now there's an idea! Can just imagine the grandchildren riding around on them whilst they collect their eggs!!

Southhamsdarling said...

Gawgus things - my little chick isn't going to be eaten, thank you very much!!Yes, it probably wouldn't be a good idea to introduce the Alpacas to the grandchildren!! LOL!

Congratulations on having your chick's name picked! How fun! Baby chicks are so cute! I love your story about your hubby wanting chickens! The alpaca looks like a llama. Are they related? My Ashley doesn't like llama's because she had one stare at her with one eye! It kind of "freaked her out"! LOL! ~~~ Thanks for checking in on me, too! I'm doing ok. Just making phone calls and getting the word out that I am looking for another job. Something will turn up. Right now, I am just finishing my days where I am. I will finish by the end of next week. It will be a bittersweet day, for sure.

Loved your post and blog today. Thanks so much for your visit.

Becky - Hi there. I suspect that the alpaca is related to the lama, but the alpaca is much cuter, with curly wool! That was funny about your daughter and the lama! I just know that something will turn up for you on the job front.

LV - thank you for popping over, and I'm glad you enjoyed the post today.
