Films & Songs

Dear Blog, Well, today I was going to go for a little walk and take some photoes of close by where I live, but it's damp, dreary and miserable out there, so that will have to wait for another day.  I did find this photo of a beach close by, which is one of my favourite coastal walks. The walk is not too long, about five miles, and there is a lovely olde-worlde pub at the end, overlooking the sea.  You can see how empty the beach is, and it's like this even in high summer when the children are on their school holidays.  Now that's how I like my beaches!!  When I see photoes of beaches and there are so many people on them that you could hardly find a spot to put a towel down, well, that makes me shudder.

Now there's a coincidence actually that I was just talking about beaches, because on the radio this morning, I heard a song that I hadn't heard for a long, long time, but one which I absolutely love.  It was Bette Midler, singing The Wind Beneath my Wings, which was, of course, from the film Beaches, which also starred the divine Miss Midler!  How I loved that film, and can't remember how many times I watched it on video.  It's about female friendship, and I remember crying buckets.  I wonder if any of you have a person in YOUR life that is your "wind beneath your wings."  I would love to watch that film again, so perhaps I'll put it on my Christmas Wish List.  I'm sure they must have it on DVD.  Actually, I've just realized that it was released in 1988 - no! surely it can't be that long ago!! - so many of you will have been to young to have seen it.

Do you have any favourite films that had really good songs in them?  Just a few of my favourites would have to be Love on the Rocks by Neil Diamond, from the film The Jazz Singer, and who could forget Demi Moore and Patrick Swayze from the film Ghost whilst Unchained Melody by the Righteous Brothers was playing in the background. (I love that record, having been there when it originally came out in 1965.  Oh no!  This post is making me feel so OLD!!).  Another favourite of mine is one of the songs from the film Top Gun, starring Tom Cruise, and the song is Take my Breath Away by Berlin.

I am going off on a tangent here, but over 30 years ago, I went to see a Fortune Teller (a very famous one where I live, called Acora, who comes from a very long line of Romany Gypsies.)  Anway, amongst other things, he told me that I was going to make "old bones".  I was talking to a good friend the other day and I said that I didn't have to worry, as Acora had told me I would make old bones.  She just looked at me for a minute, and then said "I hate to say it, but you ARE old bones".  Charming!  But she's probably right of course, as I am in my sixties.  Hopefully I've got a few years left in me yet dear blogging  friends!

This...I love this post. Beaches was a great movie and so was the Jazz Singer. One of my favorites for song was The Way We Were. Hearing Streisand singing that and watching handsome Redford on the big screen back then was so wonderful. Thanks for a fun post to read with my wake up juice....COFFEE!!!!!!

I loved Beaches, too. I like Gary Morris' version of the song better, though. He did it first... (at least, "first" when I heard it but since it was prior to 1988, probably actually did it before Bette). But, love her version, too. Have both of them on my iPod.
